Last Chance

This weekend is your last chance to get your album completed if you want to have it in time for Christmas. I know that all album companies set a deadline by close of business today, but if the album is there by open of business Monday morning, they may still get it done.

Unfortunately, I cannot assure Christmas delivery on any album order placed after this weekend. While the album companies do try to complete as many orders as they can, there is no way of knowing how many extra orders they will be able to complete.

Halloween Photo Tip

Halloween is just a few short days away. Can you believe it? I’m sure you have your favorite ghoul or princess that you just have to photograph. When taking your child’s photo, remember to come down to their level. If you photograph down on them, you will make them look even shorter than they really are. Furthermore, you may not get to see their faces. When you come down to your child’s level to photograph them, you are seeing them as they really are. You may also get rid of some annoying backgrounds. Finally, don’t worry about getting a smile. As long as your child is not crying, mom will still love the photo, even if they are not smiling!

Romance and Contemporary Album Holiday Deadlines

I just heard from the first of the album companies. They are the ones who make the Romance and Contemporary albums for me. Between printing, shipping and all the rest of the process, I need to have those albums finalized by October 31 in order to assure that you will have your wedding album by Christams. While there is still a chance your album might make it by the wire, there are no guarantees! You might have to wait until after January 1 when production resumes after the holidays.

Interviewing Photographers is a two way process

Did you know that finding just the right photographer can be a two way process? Some studios don’t care about a good client fit. They are either large studios with a sales staff and sales quotas or a hungry photographer who will take any booking they can get. This is a disservice to not only themselves but, the clients as well.

You should use the four “P”s of photography: Personality, Photography Style, Package and Price to select your wedding photographer. As you are interviewing the photographer, a professional photographer may also decide if you are the right client fit for them. Personality, Photography Style and Price are looked at in this decision process.

Price
The easiest fit test is Price. If you can only afford $1800 for a complete photography package and the photographer’s packages start at $3600, then you are both wasting your time by continuing discussions. However, a $500-$1000 difference might be surmountable. It all depends on how much each side is willing to bend.

Photographic Style
One factor which sets each photographer apart from another, is their own unique style. Some photographers may have a similar style but there are subtle differences. Other photographers have drastically different styles. The main wedding photography styles today are Traditional, Photojournalism, Artistic and Reportage. I recently referred a potential client to another photographer because the client wanted very Traditional photography. As a photographer who specializes in a blend of Traditional (to make the parents happy), PJ with a dash of Artistic thrown in, I knew this client would be paying a lot of extra money to hire me to photograph their wedding in a purely traditional style. After politely explaining this to the potential client, I referred them to another photographer who’s style more closely fits what the client desires.

Personality
Finally, some photographers see if their personalities mesh with yours. This is the most intangible of factors which a photographer may use to determine if they want to accept you as a client. Some photographers call this their gut feeling or intuition concerning a client. Photographers are human too, we try to work with everybody but, every so often there is somebody who makes us uncomfortable for one reason or another. Most of the time, the clients feel the tension too and book a different studio. Sometimes, despite the tension, the client wants to book the photographer. When that happens, the photographer may decide to be unavailable. In this case, it is much better to continue looking for a photographer who is as excited to work with you are you are to hire them.

Finding the right photographer is not an easy task. From our perspective finding new clients is not easy either. A professional photographer wants you to have a great wedding day so they can capture all of those magical moments which make your wedding day special. It takes just the right match between photographer and client to make sure you will receive the wedding photography you expect and deserve.

Holiday Deadlines Approaching

I know, I know, who can think about Christmas when it is 90 degrees out and the calendar says it is still summer. But if you want your wedding album to show your family at Christmas, then we’ve got until the end of October to complete your design. Once I receive word from the album companies, I’ll try to pass the word along to you.

I realize, I’m a little backed up but I’m working as fast as I can to catch up. If you’ve already received your preliminary draft, then just let me know what changes you desire and we can get your album moving.

Houston, We have a Problem!

Oh No! I’ve just discovered a technical glitch. It seems that posts I thought were being made, have disappearred. I’ve managed to restore many of the missing entries, but I still have some work to do.

I think I lost about 3 months worth. So far, I’ve managed to fix about 5 weeks of missing entries, which brings us to mid August. I will have to continue working on this later when I have time. Rest assured, I will catch up and you will not miss a single item of news.

NACE

I’ve joined NACE. What’s NACE you may ask…. it is the National Association of Catering Executives. Now what the heck is a photographer doing by joining a bunch of catering people. Learning and networking. This is an opportunity to meet the catering managers I interact with on wedding days. Unfortunately, at weddings, both the catering executives and I are too busy to really get a chance to talk and exchange ideas. Fortunately, there is NACE.

Each month’s meeting is at a different location. This month the meeting was held at Now We’re Cooking. Now We’re Cooking is a combination commercial, demonstration and instructional kitchen located in one facility. They can cater, you can rent the kitchen or host an event right there. We had an evening where we learned how to make some of the dishes found at a Tapas Bar. As you can see the best part was eating our class project!

New Office

My new office was supposed to be ready this evening for me to move over. Needless to say, it isn’t. This week the workmen have been busy and it is exciting to see parts coming together. We can see how the basement will flow. We’ve selected the flooring and colors for the walls. Mostly I just agree with what Sheryl picks.

For my office I needed a white. Bill, our designer, was not happy with my selection. He wanted some sort of off-white, color or tinted white on my office walls. It took a couple of tries but I finally got through to Bill that photographer’s need white on the walls. I’m sure he would have blown a gasket if I picked the other option for a photographer’s office walls — black!

I’ll be at a bridal show this weekend. It is at the Charlestowne Mall. If you have a moment or two, please stop by and visit. I will be featuring my new CD-ROM and CoolTure album. I’m excited to see how well it goes over with prospective clients.

Anyway, this promises to be a long weekend so I better get off to bed. I’m told the contractors will be arriving at 7:30 or 8:00 to finish my new office. Finally a milestone will be reached.
